Impromptu Tricks
These are my favorite kind of tricks: the ones you can do right now. Somebody slides a deck across the table and says “show me something,” and you can. No setup, no special cards, no running off to the other room to arrange anything first.
Because you can’t prepare the deck, impromptu tricks have to create their secrets in front of everyone. You glimpse the bottom card while you shuffle, you secretly flip a card while the spectator looks at theirs, or you let the spectator’s own counting do the work. The trick is to make those moments look like nothing at all.
The best way to practice is to carry a deck around for a week and do your chosen trick for anyone who’ll watch. Family is fine. You’ll learn more from five real performances than from fifty in front of the mirror.
A few to try: Back Flip makes a card jump out of the deck face up, and it’s great with kids. After Drinks has you toss the deck onto a chair and still come up with their two cards. Slap Happy ends with a satisfying slap that leaves only the chosen card in your hand, and Cutting the Aces is a lovely showpiece once you’ve got the hang of a finger break. Many of the Easy Tricks are impromptu too, and when you’re ready for more, try the Intermediate Tricks.
